A Reflection on 2016
As the year comes to a close, I just wanted to take time to reflect on this year - my successes, failures, things I learnt, and the overall good and bad.
2016 was a year of many new experiences for me. I got introduced to the field of interaction/UX design this year, and that was probably my biggest discovery of the year. I was inspired in a big way, and I think this year was the year I finally figured out what I wanted to do career wise. Some of my other successes were building a portfolio, getting side projects done from start to finish, and landing my first ever freelance project! The things I enjoyed most about these projects was learning about the design world. I discovered great tools such as Sketch and Framer, and I also found great communities within Facebook's design world and Medium. This year was the year I committed to myself that I am going to become a designer, and I am proud to say that since the day I came across this field, I haven't swayed from that goal.
I got to see some great parts of the world this year, I travelled to Iceland and Poland for the first time - highly recommend! Iceland was magical and it inspired me even more, there is so much beauty in the world and the knowledge of that lets my creativity reach new heights. It was a refreshing experience and I am ready to go back as soon as I can.
I've been able to find my footing in college, in part due to some really great friends I made in August. I've become much more confident in my abilities this year, and although I'm still learning how to trust my instincts, I think pursuing art and design has pushed me towards being able to trust my instincts. I finished three art pieces this year, and I'm extremely happy with how they turned out (I really think it's some of my best work).
I've had a couple of big learning experiences this year academically and relationship wise. My learnings have allowed me to come away from these experiences with a stronger mind, and have also taught me to take every low point as a learning experience.
I definitely think that the second half of this year was exponentially better than the first half, but looking back this year has been an absolutely fantastic year and I'm ready for 2017 to be even better.
